Demand for blockchain technology-related trademarks rises.

Blockchain trademark applications kept increasing in 2022 in the U.S., including for Crypto, NFT, and Metaverse.

According to a report by Mike Kondoudis, an intellectual property lawyer, trademark filings in the U.S. focusing on cryptocurrencies continue to rise. Trademark registrations for NFT, Metaverse, and cryptocurrencies have already passed the number of registrations made in 2021.

The 2022 numbers are: 1,078 for NFT, 604 for cryptocurrencies, and 759 for the Metaverse, and data show that individuals and companies have made over 3,600 trademark applications for Web3 services.

The comparison was made as of August 31 with the totals for 2021. In total, there were 3,516 registrations in 2021.

Besides the total Web3 registrations, NFT has shown an enormous leap by doubling their number of applications. There were 2,087 registrations in 2021, with this number rising to 5,800 by August 31, 2022.

Metaverse and Web3 numbers, on the other hand, have grown even faster, as the number of registrations reached 4,150 by August 2022, yet the 2021 total was only 1,866, meaning they have more than doubled compared to the past year.

According to the reports, NFT led all registration types with 1,078 registrations, followed by crypto (604 registrations) and the Metaverse (759 registrations) in March 2022. Although August had the lowest number of registrations, 2022 has still doubled the previous year’s numbers.

On the other hand, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of the company previously known as Facebook, now Meta, has announced preparations to make NFT available on Instagram.

According to a report on the Cointelegraph server, MetaBirkins founder Mason Rothschild has been sued by the luxury brand Hermès for profiting from sales of NFT using Hermès’s registered name Birkin. Hermès also applied for a trademark registration to use its name in the Metaverse.

Meanwhile, companies both related and not related to the crypto space, such as Meta, Formula One, Mastercard, McDonald’s, Gatorade, and the U.S. Space Force, have all registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office in 2022 in relation to their products in the crypto space.
