FIFA Introduces Mobile Game with Artificial Intelligence

The mobile football game from FIFA and Altered State Machine is based on artificial intelligence technology, and NFT integration is planned for the future.

The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) launched the FIFA World Cup AI League open beta on 3 April 2023. It is a 4v4 football strategy game in which characters, cosmetics, and gameplay elements are controlled by artificial intelligence (AI).

The game was created by Web 3.0 company Altered State Machine and is only available for Android mobile devices, with iOS to follow soon. The open beta expands on a version of the game launched last November, which predicted World Cup results.

The game doesn't feature famous football personalities like Christiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, who have marketing and sponsorship deals with crypto companies. Instead, the game features colorful Disney-like characters wearing stylish outfits and playing football together. The entire game is controlled by artificial intelligence, which evaluates the characters' strengths and weaknesses. It is a football manager in which players take on the roles of manager, coach, and team owner, trying to pick the best players to make their team win. Players are treated to scaled-down pitches inspired by real Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Yaoundé, and Seoul locations.

Aaron McDonald, the co-founder of Altered State Machine, said:

"Our mission is to introduce casual gamers to the world of AI gaming in the metaverse, and with FIFA AI League, we are unlocking a unique new opportunity for football fans worldwide to interact with their favorite sport."

The AI League game is Free-To-Play for now, but there are plans to launch this game with NFT elements in the future. When that happens, the characters will be stamped as NFT and will likely be available for sale and purchase on marketplaces.

The in-game currency is available to purchase cosmetic upgrades for characters. However, it is not a cryptocurrency, and this is due to the restrictions that Google and Apple have in place regarding cryptocurrency trading.

A representative from Altered State Machine said that the introduction of NFT would come later, as the main goal is for players to enjoy the game without being distracted by the NFT elements.

This strategy is increasingly emerging in Web 3.0 games as players want a more fun game, leading developers to release a classic Web 2.0 game first and add Web 3.0 elements later when the game has enough players.

FIFA itself is no newcomer to crypto games; for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the company got a sponsor with crypto space, launched an NFT platform, and partnered with other Web 3.0 game studios to integrate the World Cup theme into crypto games.

"I've tested the game, and graphically it looks really nice, but the AI seems a bit weird to me. Every time it looked like I would lose a game, my team scored a goal in a style that wasn't natural. So far, I've never lost. Either I won, or it was a draw. The other thing that annoys me about the game is the microtransactions, admittedly it's a method that virtually all mobile games use, but if you want a different pitch or cosmetic upgrades in this game, it means you either have to play a bunch of matches, or pull out your credit card and in-game purchase currency with fiat money. The big plus, however, is that the game is Free-To-Play for now, so I recommend all football fans try it."
