This Year's CES 2023 Introduced Big News For The Metaverse

OVR Technology showcased a VR headset at CES 2023, which contained 8 different scents that could be combined to create other scents.

A report by consultancy firm McKinsey & Company predicts that the metaverse could generate up to $5 trillion by 2030. The report also points out that the success of the metaverse depends on people's acceptance of it, and there is therefore a need to develop technology that will provide positive experiences for users on multiple levels. One of these experiences could be the integration of smell and touch into VR, the technology for which was demonstrated at the recent Consumer Electronics Show 2023 (CES).

According to Fortune magazine, a company called OVR Technology demonstrated a headset with a container for eight scents that can be mixed together to create new scents. The official release of this VR headset is reportedly scheduled for later in 2023. The first version, which is being used for marketing, offers users to smell different things such as roasting a marshmallow or a bed of roses.

OVR CEO, Aron Wisniewsky. explained that this augmented reality would soon be connected to commerce, entertainment, social connection, education and wellbeing. He further stressed that scent adds "unparalleled power" to these experiences.

Aurora Townsend, a senior executive at FireFlare Games, also gave a brief update on the product they are working on. Their company wants to launch a VR dating app to incorporate immersive sensations like touch once the technology is readily available within the market.

But according to one of the CES attendees, Ozan Ozaskinli, who has tried several haptic products, the technology is "far from reality" at the moment. The technology consultant went on to say that it could potentially be integrated into online meetings in order to heighten a sense of feeling.

Already last year, CES was packed with blockchain and metaverse technologies, and the event was attended by various personalities from the crypto world. Several major brands also showcased blockchain and metaverse developments at their booths, including Samsung, who announced a platform for NFTs.
